Slow Mohs and Staged Excisions

For Patients with a Diagnosis of Melanoma, Lentigo Maligna or Atypical Nevus/Dysplastic Mole, we Perform a Process We Refer to as “Slow Mohs.”

Slow Mohs staged excisions are new and advanced Mohs procedures that can effectively address cancerous lesions like melanomas and dysplastic moles. Slow Mohs has the highest rate of cure for skin cancer removal, and it also preserves the most healthy tissue. Atlanta Derm Surgery performs Slow Mohs staged excisions in Atlanta.

Am I a Good Candidate?

A Slow Mohs staged excision can be an ideal option for patients with melanomas, lentigo maligna, or dysplastic moles. The best candidates are those who are willing to go through the whole treatment plan for a safe and complete removal of their lesions.

Your Consultation

During your consultation, we will carefully examine the melanomas or moles you want to get rid of. We will explain the entire Slow Mosh staged excision process to you, from the preparation through the actual procedure all the way to aftercare/recovery. All your concerns will be addressed before we decide on the schedule of your procedure.

The Process

If your diagnosis makes it desirable for us to perform Slow Mohs staged excision, we will use “permanent” section processing, which takes 10-14 hours to process. We will remove the first layer exactly as described, but you will go home immediately thereafter. You will need to return the next morning to find out the results of the pathology. At that time, we will know whether there are any “roots” left and if we have to take an additional layer of tissue. Once the margins are clear, we will be able to do whatever is necessary to repair the wound. Therefore, you will need to plan on at least two (and possibly more) visits on sequential days for this type of cancer.

Recovery Period

The patient can go home after the procedure. Recovery instructions will be given to the patient before being released. These instructions must be followed closely.

Soreness, bruising, and swelling may be experienced for the first few days of recovery. Prescription medications may be provided to deal with discomfort. Certain physical activities will be prohibited to prevent bleeding in the surgical area.

The Cost of Slow Mohs Staged Excision

The cost of Slow Mohs staged excision is typically covered by health insurance providers. Contact your provider to ensure that they cover the price of this procedure.
