MicroNeedling (SkinPen®) & Collagen Induction Therapy
Answers to Most Common Questions About MicroNeedling:
What is microneedling (SkinPen®)?
SkinPen® is a non-surgical, cosmetic micro-needling device that creates ‘micro’ skin punctures to improve the appearance of the skin by inducing the skin’s self-repair mechanisms. Benefits include reducing the signs of aging, improving the appearance of scars, as well as rejuvenating aging skin. SkinPen® is safe in all skin types and can be used in various locations including the face, hands and décolleté.
Which skin issues can microneedling correct?
The SkinPen® can be used to target numerous facial issues:
- Acne and acne scarring
- Age spots (also called sun spots)
- Wrinkles and fine lines
- Enlarged pores
- Various types of scars
- Reduction in elasticity of the skin
- Uneven skin tone
Microneedling is also used to relieve stretch marks and scarring on many other parts of the body. However, the treatment is mainly used mostly on face.
How does microneedling work?
Losing collagen as a result of the aging process or damage is a common problem. By stimulating the skin tissues to produce new collagen protein at a higher rate, microneedling increases the speed and effectiveness of the natural skin-repair process. The tiny pinpricks created by the treatment cause minor skin damage, triggering repair.
New skin tissue is healthier and more even in color and texture. This eliminates skin imperfections and creates firmness and structure.
How long does the procedure take?
The procedure typically takes 30 minutes to perform. Most patients arrive early for their appointments to allow for the application of a topical numbing agent, which makes the procedure relatively pain free.
The SkinPen® microneedling device is then used on the treatment areas. It is guided evenly across the region to create even results. The pinpricks created are so tiny that after the treatment, you will not be able to detect them. Once the treatment is complete, a serum or soothing medication will be applied.
What is the downtime and what side effects should I expect?
Generally, patients can return to their daily schedule after a few hours. Total recovery and healing time depends on the individual patient, and areas treated. Most patients have slight redness and swelling for the first 24-48 hours (like a moderate sunburn). Peeling is uncommon. Some patients may experience pinpoint bruising and bleeding.
When will I see results?
Most patients notice healthier-looking skin immediately. The skin’s repair mechanisms will continue to work for several weeks and final results can take up to 3-6 months.
How many procedures will I need?
The number of treatments needed is variable based on procedure goals and the overall health of your skin. Most patients receive a series of 3 procedures spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. Acne scarring and severe photodamage may require more treatments.
Do I have to use a certain product line with SkinPen®?
We recommend using the SkinFuse® system as it was specifically created for post microneedled skin. A 3-month supply is included with your SkinPen® treatment.
